A host of free music events will be offered to the public during Festival Amadeus.

The week-long classical music festival takes place July 22-28 in Whitefish.

Selected rehearsals of the Festival Amadeus chamber ensembles will be available to attend for free, along with a chance to observe a piano master class, ensemble performances and a recital by students attending Camp Festival Amadeus, North Valley Music School’s chamber music camp held concurrently during the week.

The camp is funded in part by the Montana Arts Council, an agency of the state government, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Visit northvalleymusicschool.org for more information on the free events or call 253-0361.

Launching the week of music-making will be a free open air orchestra concert Sunday in Whitefish Depot Park on the new Great Northern sound shell stage.

Gates open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. concert. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Food, wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Music Director John Zoltek will lead the Festival Amadeus Orchestra in a selection of works by Beethoven, Rossini and Mozart. Violinist Tim Fain will join the orchestra in works by Dvorak, Kreisler and Saint-Saens.

The Instrument Petting Zoo, provided by the Glacier Symphony and Chorale and North Valley Music School, will also be on display at the open air concert, providing an opportunity for youths and adults to try out various classical music instruments.

On Monday, the public is invited to an open rehearsal by Fain and pianist April Lane from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy Center.

Also on Monday, at 3:30 p.m. the youth string musicians participating in Camp Festival Amadeus will present a recital of classical and folk music in solo and ensemble pieces for violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet and harp at the Whitefish Four Square Church, 233 Kalispell Ave. More than 35 aspiring musicians ages 12 to 18 will be studying at the camp with 12 guest artists and teachers.

On Tuesday, open rehearsal will feature Amit Peled on cello, Dinah Weimer on clarinet and Alon Goldstein from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy Center.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, the public can observe Goldstein teach a number of intermediate to advanced piano students in a master class held at North Valley Music School in Whitefish. Seating is limited at this event.

Also on Tuesday, from 5 to 6 p.m. camp students will be performing some of their favorite pieces on the patio in front of Piney Creek Interior Design at 100 Central Ave.

On Thursday, July 26, harp students will present a solo and ensemble recital from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at the Whitefish Four Square Church.

On Friday, July 27, at noon at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center, the camp students will offer a concert showcasing their work. Students will perform classical and traditional pieces in both an orchestra and small ensembles.

In addition to the free events, Festival Amadeus includes concerts nearly every evening at 7:30 p.m. the Whitefish Performing Arts Center. On Monday, the main event is “Virtuoso Violins and Vino,” a wine-tasting and silent auction at the O’Shaughnessy Center.
