LEGION BASEBALL: Prairie splits to open Ephrata tourney
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 6 months AGO
EPHRATA, Wash. - The Prairie Cardinals class AA squad beat the Diamond Jaxx of Burbank, Wash., 11-1 and lost to the Spokane Crew 7-6 in eight innings Friday on the first day of the Northwest Prep Championships.
Nathan Collier went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Prairie vs. the Diamond Jaxx. Tyler Burnett was 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Shaffer and Tyler Burnett teamed on a four-hitter for the Cardinals.
Against the Crew, Zack Reeder went 2 for 4 and scored two runs, and struck out four in two innings of relief. But in the top of the eighth inning, he was out trying to score from second base on a single, and was ejected from the game for what Prairie coach Dustin Frank was told was "malicious contact" in running over the catcher on a bang-bang play in which he actually knocked the ball loose from the catcher.
"If he was in the pros, he would have been safe," said Frank, who was thrown out arguing the play. "But it wasn't a dirty play. They were trying to block the plate, and we were trying to score."
But, since Frank had used all his subs by then, Prairie had to play the bottom of the eighth with eight players and Shaffer, who had already pitched three innings in the opener and two innings of relief against the Crew, had to pitch again.
And with Prairie having just two outfielders, both shading the alleys, a routine ground single to left field wound up rolling all the way to the fence, allowing the winnning run to score all the way from first base.
Prairie (20-17) wraps up round-robin play in the five-team tourney today, playing the Columbia Basin River Dogs at 12:30 p.m. and the Seattle Titans at 3.
