MOSES LAKE - The Walleyes three-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday evening as the team dropped a doubleheader to the Yakima Valley Peppers at Larson Field.

The first game of the twin bill was scoreless through an inning and a half of play. The Walleyes got things going in the bottom of the second as they loaded the bases with no outs. Cole Raymond popped up to record the first out and the bases remained full. Trino Rubio was hit by a pitch on the next Walleye at bat, which brought in a runner from third for the first score of the game.

Then up stepped Brett Moser who hit a ball into the gap in left center field for a triple and cleared the bases. He advanced home on the play on an overthrow to the plate to make it 5-0 in favor of the home team.

The lead held up until the wheels came off the Walleye express in the top of the fourth inning. Control issues by starting pitcher Anthony Rios and a throwing error by Moser at shortstop allowed the Peppers to make a game of it as they pushed four runners across the plate.

Moses Lake threatened in the bottom of the fourth as the Walleyes had runners on first and second base with no outs. But Rubio popped up on a bunt attempt for the first out and the next Moses Lake batter hit into a double play to end the inning and the scoring threat.

The Peppers put two on base with no outs in the top of the fifth and that was the end for Rios. Spencer Street came on in relief but didn't fare much better as he gave up an infield hit and walked two batters to give Yakima Valley its first lead of the game 6-5.

A throwing error by Street on a squeeze bunt attempt brought two more runs across the plate to make it 8-5 with no outs.

An infield hit and a overthrow by the Walleye catcher who was trying to throw out a Pepper stealing second pushed the score to 11-5.

Moses Lake got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all the team could muster as the Walleyes dropped the contest 11-6. Rios was tagged with the loss for Moses Lake.

Game two of the doubleheader started off well for the Walleyes as Moses Lake took a 5-3 lead through the first three innings. But another big inning by the Peppers in the top of the fourth pushed five runs home to put Yakima Valley up 8-5.

It was a lead the Peppers would not relinquish as the Walleyes only managed one more run over the last three innings of the ball game. Yakima Valley added three runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to win going away.

The Peppers out hit the Walleyes 16 to 10. Moses Lake committed three errors to Yakima Valley's two for the game.

Moser led the hitting attack for the Walleyes with two doubles. Nick Bailey had a double and Drew Loera hit a triple in the contest. Tanner Gonzalez took the loss for Moses Lake.

The two losses dropped the Walleyes to 22-19. Moses Lake ended the regular summer season tied for the eighth and final seed heading into the district tournament. The team was in Kennewick yesterday for a game against the Dusters  to determine who will be moving on, but the result of the contest was not available at press time.
