Marvin Vanderhoof, 71
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 6 months AGO
Marvin Vanderhoof, 71, of Rathdrum, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2012.
Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend; Marvin was born April 5, 1941, in Leed, S.D., and was raised by Vern and Effie Vanderhoof in Fairview, Mont.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served between the Korean and Vietnam wars.
In 1961 he moved to Coeur d’Alene. On Jan. 4, 1969, he married Pamela Lawson. They later made their home in Rathdrum and raised three children; Darian, Lane and Lawnie.
He helped with 4H and provided survival and hunting education. He coached football and baseball. While coaching baseball, he created quite a sensation when being short on players he allowed a girl to play on their team. Congress soon passed a law against gender discrimination in team sports!
As a Millwright, Marvin worked and retired after 30 years from Kaiser Aluminum (Trentwood). After retiring, Marvin started Round Mountain Enterprises, a multiservice company.
In his free time, Marvin enjoyed working his land. He provided lots of help and services to friends and neighbors in a quiet, unassuming way. He also created the best private sledding hill in North Idaho! Marvin loved dogs and cared for many over the years. For the past nine years he was rarely seen without his favorite companion, Rascal.
Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Vern; mother Effie; son Darian and father-in-law Melvin Lawson.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela; mother-in-law Lois Lawson; daughter-in-law Heather Davis; son and daughter-in-law Lane and Unity Vanderhoof; daughter and son-in-law Lawnie and Richard Mathews; grandchildren, Katie Vanderhoof-Davis, Lee, Laurel and Lindsay Vanderhoof, Joshua Vanderhoof-Mathews, Israel Mathews and Shannon Ess; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Gail Vanderhoof, Richard and Jean Gee, and James Freeman, Skip and Debbie Lawson; and multiple nieces and nephews.
