EPHRATA -Fans in the Columbia Basin will be treated to a special night of racing and fun activities Saturday evening as the Ephrata Raceway Park and the Columbia Basin Herald partner together to raise money for Relay for Life.
"We've got a busy night planned," Rita Witte with Ephrata Raceway Park said. "This is the first time in quite a while we'll have the Early Stocks racing, so it's nice to have them back."
The Northwest Early Stocks bring back the look of old time racing as drivers motor around the track in original steel car bodies made between 1928-1940. Cars weigh a minimum of 2,100 pounds and have leaf spring suspension at all four corners.
The engines in the old jalopies are either inline sixes or flathead V-8's.
Drivers will also be competing in the Jerry's Auto Supply Racing Series Ephrata Pioneer Muffler II Pure Stocks, Schaeffer Oil Mini Stocks, Pepsi Street Stocks and Jerry's Auto Supply 360 Sprints. The Sprints will be racing in place of the Kim Janke State Farm Youth Hornets as a make up race.
The Herald will be holding a mustache dash to raise money for Relay For Life. The categories are the most marvelous mustache, best of the beardiest and facial hair freestyler. The entry fee is $5 per contestant. All proceeds go to Relay for Life.
The fundraising event is not limited to the team from the Herald. All Relay for Life teams are welcome to participate. The money earned will go to back to the respective teams participating in the contest.
Costume mustache's will be available for kids who want to take part in the event.
Winners in for each category will be announced in the Columbia Basin Herald and will receive an "on-the-go grooming kit." Entrants will also have a chance to win a 26 week home delivery of the Herald, a quarter page display ad or a free cruise for two adults on the St. Joe River in Idaho.
The gates at the Ephrata Raceway Park open at 5 p.m. Racing gets underway 7 and concludes at approximately 10:30.
The cost of admission is $8 for adults. Students, seniors and military personnel is $6.50. A family pass (two adults and three youth) is $20. Kids 5 and under get in free.
