GREAT FALLS — Libby (30-25) and Mission Valley (47-7) regrouped from tough opening-round losses on Thursday with some lopsided loser-out victories on Friday at the Class A State American Legion baseball tournament.

Libby, a 17-13 victim to three-time defending champ Laurel, crushed Great Falls 19-8 while Mission Valley, a 4-3 loser to Glasgow, blasted Vauxhall 15-0 on a no-hitter by Justin Evertz (11-0).

Both area teams move on to loser-out action again today.

Libby took charge of Friday’s contest with a nine-run fifth inning. Cameron Burkes singled twice for Libby in the fifth.

Josh Foote led Libby’s hit parade with three in five plate appearances. He drove in four runs.

“We had a lot of help today from guys at the bottom of the order,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said.

“Guys like Cameron Burkes, Josh Foote and Andrew Haggerty (2 for 4 with two RBI).

“I’m proud of the improvement shown by Cameron and Josh. To be able to contribute to a win in the state tournam ent is pretty special for them,” Morford added.

Nic Robertson, 2 for 3, also had four RBIs while Micah Germany drove in three.

Libby had 15 hits on the day, all singles.

“We’re hitting .394 as a team so far,” Morford said.

“That leads the tournament.”

The 19 runs were a season high for a game.

Will Reichel (8-2) went the distance on the mound. He gave up seven hits, walked five and struck out four.

“It wasn’t a shut-down job, but he did what he had to do in seven inning to win it,” Morford said of Reichel.

“It was a journeyman-like effort.

“He struck a few guys out with a pretty good change-up,” he added.

“Mostly, he kept the ball down and threw strikes.”

Colton Philip and Quest Fellows were the top hitters for Great Falls (31-25). Philips was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Fellows was 2 for 3 with one RBI.

The victory gave Libby back-to-back seasons with at least 30 wins.

Evertz had 12 strikeouts in his seven innings of work and walked four. He threw 64 strikes and 44 balls.

Zeke Webster-Yaqui and Dalton Molzhon both had three hits to power the Mariners offense. All total, the team had 15.

Jack Humphreys doubled for Mission Valley while Webster-Yaqui tripled.

Webster-Yaqui and Robbie Gauthier both drove in three runs.

Mission Valley scored in every inning. The big inning was the fourth with four runs. The Mariners had three-run innings in the first, third and fifth.

Vauxhall (29-19) had five errors in the game.

In the winners’ bracket on Friday, Glasgow (40-18) nipped Gallatin Valley 4-3 while Belgrade pulled out a 7-6 victory over Laurel.

In today’s session, loser-out, it’s Libby vs. Gallatin Valley (34-22) at 12:30 p.m. followed by Mission Valley and Laurel (46-16-1) at 4 p.m.

Glasgow faces Belgrade (40-17) at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 in tournament play.

Morford said Jared Winslow will pitch for Libby today.
