Registration under way for 3-on-3 hoop tourney at NIC

COEUR d'ALENE - Basketball players are encouraged to register teams now for the Coeur d'Alene Shootout, a 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament Aug. 25 and 26 at North Idaho College.

The Coeur d'Alene Shootout is a double-elimination tournament with standard half-court games played to 20 points or 25 minutes for ninth grade and up. Eighth-graders and under have a three-game guarantee.

Boys and girls in the third grade and older can participate in 10 different divisions. Teams will be placed in the bracket of the oldest player on the team.

Entry fee is $100 per team and includes a T-shirt. Entries must be received by Aug. 20. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and the number of teams will be limited. Registration forms are available at The Sports Cellar located at 402 Sherman Ave. or download one at www.nicathletics.com. Disc golf tourney to benefit local humane society

The Flying Furball Open starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. Registration for the two-round tournament runs from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Corbin Park in Post Falls. After the round concludes, play will resume at Cherry Hill Park in Coeur d'Alene after a 1 1/2-hour lunch break.

Tournament proceeds will benefit the Kootenai Humane Society's Community Lifeline for Animal Welfare Services program. Tournament director Kris Kummings said a recent Coeur d'Alene Press story highlighting CLAWS' pet food shortfalls inspired him to organize the tournament.

All registered players are required to donate any amount of cat or dog food to play. Registration costs $20 for the Open division, $15 for Advanced or Intermediate, and $10 for Recreational and Junior divisions. North Idaho Disc Golf Club members receive a $5 discount.

The tournament offers a players pack to all participants, an ace pot and prizes for closest to the pin, worst drive and largest pet food donation. Mulligans will be available to purchase for all divisions except for Open. Lunch from Texas Roadhouse will be available for purchase at Cherry Hill between rounds.

Boise Blast looking to attract North Idaho players

BOISE - Tryouts for the Boise Blast ASA softball program for the 2012-13 season are scheduled for Aug. 11 at Timberline High.

The 12-and-under tryout is from 9 to 11 a.m. MDT; the 14U tryout is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the 16U from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and the 18U tryout from 3:30 to 5:30.

Registration for each age group begins 30 minutes before tryout.

A makeup tryout for all ages is scheduled for Aug. 15 at Bishop Kelly High from 6 to 8 p.m.

Zags to face Clemson in Old Spice Classic opener

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Gonzaga's men's basketball team will open the 2012 Old Spice Classic against Clemson on Thanksgiving night at 6 p.m. PST on ESPN2 to conclude the first day of action.

The Bulldogs, who won the 2008 title, are ranked 20th in the ESPN.com preseason Top 25 poll.

This will be just the second meeting between Gonzaga and Clemson on the hardwood. The Bulldogs claimed an 84-71 victory over the then-fifth-ranked Tigers on Nov. 23, 1997, in the championship game of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Clemson finished 16-15 last season.

The Bulldogs are in the same bracket as Oklahoma and UTEP.

The tourney continues Friday, takes Saturday off and concludes Sunday.

The other half of the bracket has West Virginia facing Marist and Vanderbilt playing Davidson.

WSU men's hoop schedule includes Kansas matchup

At least 16 games against 2012 postseason tournament participants and a matchup with 2012 NCAA tournament runner-up Kansas at the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo., highlight the 2012-13 Washington State men's basketball schedule, as announced by head coach Ken Bone, on Thursday.

WSU will play eight of its 13 nonconference games and all nine of its 18 Pac-12 home games in Pullman, for 17 contests at Beasley Coliseum this season. The Cougars will also play "home" games vs. Buffalo in Seattle on Dec. 21, and Idaho State in Kennewick, Wash., on Dec. 29.

WSU's season begins with Eastern Washington visiting on Nov. 10 as part of the CBE Classic. WSU hosts Idaho on Nov. 28. Gonzaga visits WSU on Dec. 5.

The Cougars open Pac-12 play at home vs. Washington, in a game tentatively scheduled for Jan. 5.

The Pac-12 Tournament is scheduled for March 13-16 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
