Wine Cellar rises up, opens Wednesday

A combination of Inland Northwest and Italian-Mediterranean decor and flavor will be featured at the Wine Cellar that opens Wednesday in its new street-level location at 317 Sherman Ave. Moving from "down below" at 313 Sherman, the new location most recently was the Brix Restaurant.
With the large historical building formerly being a department and furniture store, the space allows seating for 160 people, a banquet room, private dining areas, a wine club and tasting room, a retail shop and a state-of-the-art kitchen, according to Tom Power, owner with his wife, Patricia. Another change is the addition of a full liquor license with a classic cocktail list.
The original Wine Cellar celebrated its 20th anniversary in June. The Powers bought it two years ago with 14 employees that expanded to 22. The new place has 35. The Powers moved to Post Falls from Toronto in 1997 and also own Sunshine Minting in Coeur d'Alene. They're exploring options for the old location.
Hours are 4:30-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4:30 to midnight Friday and Saturday. The official name is The Wine Cellar Restaurant & Wine Bar. Phone 664-9463. Check www.thewinecellarcda.com.

The Coeur d'Alene store is in 15,000 square feet in the mini-mall between Canfield and Wilbur avenues west of Highway 95.
Grand opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Phone 762-0776. Check www.ulta.com.
Assisted living project starts
The construction process has started on the five-building Renaissance Assisted Living complex at 2772 W. Avante Loop. The new street is off St. Michelle Drive near Woodland Middle School in northwest Coeur d'Alene.
The first building (Phase I) should be complete in late November and the others by two years. Each 8,000-square-foot facility will house 16 residents with a gazebo in the middle of the project.
Owner is Ron Glauser of Riverside Land Holdings. Architect is Todd Butler. A "coming soon" sign will give details for interested potential clients.
Now for the new Tidbits
• New restaurants we'll soon have details for include Bullman's Pizza and LePeep in Riverstone and Satay Bistro on Fourth Street.
• Something new is coming into the Resort Plaza Shoppes.
• Readers Joe and Mary want to know the difference of "may" and "might" followed by "have." My stylebook doesn't have it. Anyone know?
• Aaaargh. A recent Spokesman-Review had a front-page story with the first two paragraphs starting with "There are..." Avoid this. "There" means nothing unless it's a destination, and it forces the writer into a boring "to be" verb such as "are." Example: "There are five people living here" should be "Five people live here."
• Websites starting with "http" aren't secure while those with "https" supposedly are with the "s" meaning "secure" as far as the reader responding with private information.
• Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says "Dam!"
