Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 6 months AGO
COEUR d'ALENE - Gil Givens hit a two-run single in the fourth inning and the Prairie Cardinals went on to beat the Spokane Blue Devils 12-2 in their American Legion season opener Friday at the Border Wars tournament at McEuen Field.
Givens also singled on the first pitch of the game for Prairie, which faces the Spokane Northstars today at 10:30 a.m. and the Blue Devils again at 1 p.m., both at McEuen Field.
"Gil really jumped out and set the tone for us early on," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said.
Zack Reeder had two RBIs and Tony Davidson allowed two runs over five innings for Prairie.
"Tony just threw a lot of strikes," Frank said. "Two-thirds of his pitches were strikes and he worked ahead in the count. He wasn't overpowering, just did what he does and hit his spots. It was good to see eight different guys get hits. We're a well-rounded team that counts on 1 through 9 and everyone stepped up in the lineup today - and that was nice to see."
Mitchell Cox hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the Blue Devils.
