NIC volleyball adds middle hitter, setter

The North Idaho College volleyball team added to its roster with the addition of a setter and middle hitter recently.

Shea Fahnestock, a 5-foot-10 setter from Eagle High, and Katie Schueman, a 6-1 middle hitter from Cheney, will join the Cardinals in 2012.

Fahnestock lived in Coeur d'Alene for seven years before moving to Eagle at the age of 8 and feels that playing for NIC is just "coming home." She played for Club Idaho volleyball for seven years and made the U18 Gold Elite team at the age of 15. Her team finished 30-14 this season and won a bid for the Junior Olympics in Orlando in June.

"Shea comes from a volleyball family and has played a lot in her lifetime," NIC coach Kandice Kelly said. "Her experience will bring a lot of depth to our team."

Schueman has two years of varsity experience and was selected to the 2011 All-Great Northern League second team and voted Most Valuable Offensive Player by her teammates. She has played on the Evergreen Region Club volleyball team and the Splash Volleyball club U18 national team.

"I love Katie's dedication and commitment to volleyball," Kelly said. "Her passion for the game is very obvious when she plays and even more so when she talks about playing volleyball for NIC. I have had the chance to watch her play all year and get to know her and her family. We have a lot of middle hitters coming in and Katie will definitely be competing for that starting spot."
