The Troy City Council has appointed a new interim mayor.

In a 3-1 vote, councilman Joe Arts opposing, Tony Brown was appointed at Friday’s city council meeting. Brown will serve until a new mayor is elected in November.

Brown replaces former mayor Don Banning who was recalled last month by a 190-123 margin. The recall election was sought after District Judge James Wheelis determined allegations made by council member Fran McCully against the mayor were sufficient reason.

City Council President Phil Fisher said officials received four letters of interest, including one on his own behalf, to fill the interim position. Fisher served as acting mayor until Brown’s appointment.

Fisher said Brown made a good candidate overall because of his previous experience as mayor during the ’70s and because he was not involved in the personal and political divisions under Banning’s leadership.

“We’re hoping to have this as a fresh start,” Fisher said. “We can really move forward, get this city on track, and move from this political mess that was going on.”
