POST FALLS - A 53-year-old Spokane man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly burglarizing two businesses in the Highway 41 corridor.
Mark W. Dauderman allegedly broke into the Sling Shots Espresso stand near the intersection of Seltice Way and Highway 41 and the Hico gas station at Mullan Avenue and Highway 41.
Police said it appears Dauderman allegedly broke two windows at the espresso stand around 3:30 a.m. and stole a cash register and coupons for the business.
He then allegedly broke open the cash register under the Interstate 90 overpass at Highway 41 before breaking glass doors of the gas station just to the north with rocks.
At Hico, Dauderman allegedly stole $221 worth of lottery tickets and jewelry that was in a display case.
Dauderman, who matched the description of the Hico suspect who was caught on surveillance video, was found near the liquor store on foot later in the morning at the nearby Ross Point interchange speaking to another man.
"The final straw was that he had items on him that had been stolen in the two business burglaries," Post Falls Police Capt. Pat Knight said. Dauderman repeatedly told police the other male had nothing to do with the alleged crimes.
Dauderman had a necklace with the price tag on it around his neck, according to the police report. The value of the stolen jewelry was $124.
The cash register, which had $48, was recovered under the overpass and all the other stolen items, except the lottery tickets, were recovered.
Police believe Dauderman is a transient.
"We've had an increase in homeless individuals (on the streets) since the homeless shelter closed," Knight said.
Ignite Hope, a shelter, was open for the winter. It closed its doors in the spring.
Dauderman has an extensive criminal history, including theft and resisting.
