KC's Mendoza tosses 6 hitless innings

INTERLEAGUE

Billy Butler drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning Tuesday night, and the Royals got a superb start from Luis Mendoza to spoil Zack Greinke's return to Kansas City with a 2-1 win over visiting Milwaukee.

Mendoza didn't allow a hit until he got into trouble in the seventh, and the Kansas City bullpen came through with aplomb. Aaron Crow limited the damage to Rickie Weeks' tying single, and Greg Holland (2-2) survived a shaky eighth inning to get the game to Jonathan Broxton for the save.

Yankees 6, Braves 4: Alex Rodriguez hit his 23rd career grand slam, matching Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig's record as New York won in Atlanta.

Rangers 9, Diamondbacks 1: At Arlington, Texas, Colby Lewis retired the first 16 batters and finished with a four-hitter to lead Texas past visiting Arizona.

Dodgers 5, Angels 2: Former Angel Juan Rivera hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the visiting Angels.

Athletics 8, Rockies 5: At Denver, Brandon Moss hit two home runs and Cliff Pennington and Brandon Inge also homered as Oakland beat Colorado.

Orioles 8, Pirates 6: Brian Roberts returned from a 13-month layoff to get three hits and an RBI as Baltimore beat visiting Pittsburgh.

Nationals 4, Blue Jays 2: Bryce Harper homered off the center field restaurant and Danny Espinosa added a two-run blast as Washington won at Toronto.

Red Sox 2, Marlins 1: Clay Buchholz allowed five hits and struck out a season-high nine as visiting Boston beat Miami.

Reds 7, Indians 1: Johnny Cueto allowed only one runner to reach second base as Cincinnati beat visiting Cleveland.

Mets 11, Rays 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Chris Young allowed nine hits in his second major league outing since returning from shoulder surgery and New York beat Tampa Bay.

Cubs 4, Tigers 3: Darwin Barney had three RBIs and the Cubs took advantage of two throwing errors by Jhonny Peralta in the eighth inning as Chicago beat visiting Detroit.

Twins 11, Phillies 7: At Minneapolis, Trevor Plouffe had a homer, a double and three RBIs as Minnesota beat visiting Philadelphia.

White Sox 6, Cardinals 1: A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer as Chicago won at St. Louis.

Giants 6, Astros 3: Madison Bumgarner struck out 12 as San Francisco beat visiting Houston.

LATE MONDAY

Angels 3, Dodgers 2: Albert Pujols hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lift the visiting Los Angeles Angels past the Dodgers.
