Pirates set sail

COEUR d'ALENE - Those cannon-firing scallywags who take up residence on Lake Coeur d'Alene each summer are back.
Guests who board the ship of the Pirates of the Coeur d'Alene should be prepared to be part of the crew, to listen to some songs, learn some pirate lingo and to laugh as the floating adventure unfolds.
"It's really fun," said Cooper Smith, 6. "You get treasure."
Cooper, on board Thursday when the live action cruise made its first voyage of the season, was referring to the bags of loot the pirates handed out to kids as they left the ship.
The 90-minute attraction from Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises, part of Hagadone Marine Group, opens to the public Saturday and runs through Sept. 3.
"It's a very interactive show," said director Jillian Kramer. "Everyone should be prepared to become part of it; the kids become the crew."
Geared to all ages, the show is all in good fun, and although there are some threats, no one has to walk the plank.
"Aye aye," "ahoy," and of course,"arghhh," are a few of the words young guests are taught to say like proper pirates while on board.
The cruise attraction is in its third season, and Kramer has been with it from the start.
Characters Captain Calico Jack, played this year by Cory Williamson, and his pirate wife, Mad Molly, played by Jordan Ferraro, have also been part of the show since the beginning, Kramer said.
The first season saw the pair marry, and now, a few years later, Molly's maternal instincts have kicked in, a running theme throughout the cruise.
Although Jack and Molly will be familiar to returning guests, there will be plenty of surprises.
"It really is an entirely new adventure," Kramer said.
During the season, cruises depart daily at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Children 5 and younger cruise for free. Tickets are $21.75 for children (6-12) and $31.75 for adults.
Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises also offers Pirates of The Coeur d'Alene charter cruises, as well as a grown-up pirate cruise on weekends for ages 21 and older.
All cruises depart from Independence Point in downtown Coeur d'Alene, between Coeur d'Alene City Park and The Coeur d'Alene Resort.
Tickets available at www.piratecruisecda.com or call (208) 765-4000, ext. 21.
