Lumbermen power past Barons, capture tournament title

CALDWELL - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen pounded out 17 hits and routed the Boise Barons 18-5 in five innings Sunday in the championship game of the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic at Vallivue High.
Brett Robbins went 2 for 2, drove in three runs and scored three times for Coeur d'Alene (13-1). Nick Nyquist was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Pete Hoffman had four RBIs, and Joe Roletto was 3 for 3 and scored three runs.
The Barons, the Legion team of Bishop Kelly High, scored three runs in the top of the first inning - only to see the Lumbermen answer with seven runs in the bottom of the first, and seven more in the second. Hoffman hit a three-run triple in the second inning.
"We just had great approaches today," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "They are buying into the way we want to approach each at-bat. They (the Barons) jumped on us and we were unflappable, we didn't let it bother us."
Coeur d'Alene returns to action Wednesday at the Best of the Northwest tournament at McEuen Field.

2-2 at tourney
SPOKANE - The Coeur d'Alene Loggers lost 8-5 to Moses Lake and 2-1 to West Valley on Saturday at West Valley High and failed to make it into Sunday's placing round at the River City Shootout.
Carter Chaffin had a pair of hits for Coeur d'Alene against Moses Lake.
Against West Valley, Devin Kluss pitched a complete-game four-hitter, allowing no earned runs for the Loggers. Derek Griffin went 2 for 3 and Colby Kennedy singled in the lone run for Coeur d'Alene.
The Loggers (4-4) play a doubleheader today at 4 at Lewis-Clark, then host Missoula on Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at McEuen Field.

COEUR d'ALENE - Elliot Sparks had two hits in each game and was the winning pitcher in the opener as the Coeur d'Alene Lumberjacks swept Mead in Spokane American Legion under-16 "A" Northern League play at McEuen Field.
Sparks struck out five in a two-hit shutout in the opener for Coeur d'Alene (10-3, 7-0 NL). He hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, and scored on Jeremy Hartin's single to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Michael Hicks drove in a pair of runs in the first game for the Lumberjacks, and struck out four in four innings in the nightcap, allowing one run. Connor Killen struck out four in three innings of relief.
Coeur d'Alene plays host to Shadle Park on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Croffoot Park in Hayden.
