Idaho GOP panel: Abolish Fed, restore gold

BOISE (AP) — Idaho Republicans appear committed to a platform urging the abolition of the Federal Reserve and restoring the gold standard, over some members' misgivings.
Friday's vote of delegates on the platform committee at the state convention in Twin Falls to preserve the disputed plank wasn't final.
That comes Saturday.
But it provides a snapshot of many convention delegates who remain sympathetic toward preserving principles added by libertarian-leaning, Ron Paul Republicans since 2008, over mainstream GOP members' concerns these stray from what the party should be communicating to average voters.
A northern Idaho delegate, Ed Bangle, argued for dumping the platform's anti-Fed provisions and suggested the modern U.S. monetary system has helped the nation weather economic downturns.
But Ron Paul supporters cited Thomas Jefferson's criticism of banks before beating back Bangle's effort.
