Daily Inter-Lake | UPDATED 12 years, 7 months AGO
Lanona Jane Coburn, 79, of Missoula, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14, 2012, after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Surrounded at home by her daughters, “Jane couldn't have chosen a more beautiful and sunny day to reunite with the love of her life, her husband Dan.”
Jane was born April 4, 1933, in Dickinson, N.D., to James and Myrtle Dobie Grogan, the first of 10 children.
At the age of 13, the family moved to Seeley Lake where Jane and one other student completed eighth grade in a one-room school. Her family then moved to Missoula so Jane could attend and graduate from Missoula County High School.
Jane met her future husband, R. Dan Coburn, on a blind date in April of 1952 and after a brief courtship, the two were married on Dec. 20, 1952, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Missoula. Together, they had four daughters.
The couple resided in Missoula until 1965 when Dan was transferred to Kalispell with Westmont Tractor Co., while the Libby Dam was being constructed. In Kalispell, Jane had the opportunity to stay at home and raise her daughters, a time of her life she greatly treasured. In 1974, Dan was transferred back to Missoula, where Jane has resided ever since. In Missoula, Jane was employed first by Missoula General Hospital and later St. Patrick's Hospital, until she retired in 1995.
Jane enjoyed any activity that allowed her to spend time with her family, who were truly the light of her life. She also enjoyed traveling to new places, camping, gardening, working crosswords, and later in life, attending her grandchildren's band concerts, sporting events and various other activities. In retirement, Jane was an avid reader and stayed active with her friends and family. She enjoyed weekly luncheons with girlfriends, spending time with her sisters, and Saturday morning breakfasts at Paradise Falls.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, James and Myrtle Grogan; husband, Dan Coburn; daughter, Karen Sandall; brother, Charles Grogan; and sisters, Nancy Foltz, Janice Donaldson and Jeanie Zakos.
She is survived by sisters, Rowene Sutherland, Sylvia Iverson, Jamie and Larry McCrary of Missoula, and Beverly and Tom Rogers of Bigfork; brother, Gerald and Gwen Grogan of Black Hawk, S.D.; and sister-in-law, Eve McGhee of Virginia. Also surviving are daughters, Janet and Ken Veidt of Kalispell, Dani and Tom McLaughlin, and Lisa and Bill Kostelecky, of Missoula; son-in-law, Dave Sandall of Moxee, Wash.; her 10 grandchildren, Justin and Missy, Tony and Kristy, Daniel Roy, Steven Veidt, Staci and Mike Nugent, Amy McLaughlin and Kody, Kyle, Katie, and Kolten Kostelecky; and six great-grandchildren.
Jane will join Dan at Sunset Memorial Gardens in a private family ceremony. A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at Garden City Funeral Home, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Partners in Home Care of Missoula or to a charity of the donor's choice. Condolences for the family may be left at www.missoulafuneralhomes.com
