A 51-year-old Kalispell man pleaded not guilty Thursday in Flathead District Court to felony charges of assault with a weapon and burglary.

David Carr allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the early hours of June 3, pinned her to the bed, told her he was going to kill her and commit suicide and then stabbed her in the neck.

According to a court document, the woman fought Carr off, but he then held her at knife point for more than an hour, refusing to let her leave or call for help. She eventually convinced Carr to put the knife away and let her leave the apartment.

The woman also suffered defensive cuts on her hands.

If convicted of both charges, Carr faces up to 40 years in jail and a fine of up to $100,000.

He currently is being held in the Flathead County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000.

His next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.
