COEUR d'ALENE - Cassidy Bennett is just 6 years old, but already she has a pretty impressive trophy - sixth-place among men for Sunday's Ironman Coeur d'Alene.
No, the daughter of Shawn and Shawnasy Bennett of Hayden didn't compete in the 140.6-mile race, but perhaps in another 12 years, she will.
"That's what I'm thinking," said her dad on Monday.
Cassidy received the plaque earned by Joel Jameson of Loughborough, Great Britain, simply because she had the courage to ask about it.
Specifically, she was on the Independence Point steps watching swimmers practice in Lake Coeur d'Alene on Thursday, when she asked her mom if the those entered in the race could win trophies.
"I don't know, go ask them," her mom said.
So her daughter did.
The fearless girl walked up to a group of athletes on the steps, and Jameson began chatting with her.
He explained that yes, he would win a trophy if he did well.
"If I win, I'll tell you what," Jameson told Cassidy, "I'll keep the money and give you the trophy."
Excited, the 6-year-old watched the finish with her parents to see how Jameson did.
"I've gotta go get my trophy," she said to her parents. "I know he's going to win."
When Jameson crossed the finish line in 9 hours, 9 minutes and 52 seconds, Cassidy was there. And on Monday, following the awards presentation at City Park, Jameson delivered on his promise and turned over a wooden plaque to his new No. 1 fan.
"She was thrilled. She never doubted," Shawn Bennett said.
The award is now sitting on her dresser at home.
"It's great he was kind enough to do that for a little girl and make her day," he said.
