COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene police continued searching Tuesday for a transient who a day earlier allegedly stabbed another transient in a wooded area behind the Coeur d'Alene Target store.
James H. Kountz, 43, is wanted on a warrant for attempted second-degree murder, said Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Christie Wood.
Coeur d'Alene police and other agencies responded to the area of U.S. 95 near Wilbur Avenue at 6 p.m. Monday for a reported stabbing.
Motorists reported seeing a man stagger out of the densely wooded area on the east side of U.S. 95, cross over the northbound lanes and collapse on the grassy divider.
Bystanders provided basic first aid to his wounds. Officers arrived and also provided first aid while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive.
The 42-year-old alleged victim, James R. Hoglen, sustained multiple non-life threatening stab wounds to his upper torso and one to his face. Wood said he had an ID card out of Reno, Nev.
He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center. A spokeswoman for the hospital late Tuesday said Hoglen was in fair condition.
Hoglen identified Kountz as the suspect. Kountz is known to law enforcement for prior arrests for aggravated battery.
Officers immediately shut down U.S. 95 at Canfield and Wilbur avenues as well as surrounding streets in order to contain Kountz in the wooded area.
Officers used a helicopter and canine unit in the search.
The wooded area behind Target is sometimes inhabited with transient camps.
Wood said police have responded to the area before for fights and alcohol issues.
Kountz is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 185 pounds, with balding gray hair, hazel eyes, and was last seen wearing camouflage shorts.
