Tales too good not to share

Alan Wolfe, 57, a first-time Ironman competitor from Post Falls, made it to the finish line on Sherman Avenue about 9:45 p.m., pausing, going down into a prone position and rolling across the line. What most people in the viewing area wouldn't have known about Alan's unique finish is that it honored the only person with ALS to ever complete an Ironman competition, Jon Blais. Blais was diagnosed in 2005 and competed that year in the Hawaii Ironman, finishing with a flourish ... log rolling over the line after 16 hours. He passed away from the degenerative muscle disease in 2007. Alan also honored his late mother, Betty, who died of ALS in 1986 at the age of 58.

• Thanks to the Regence Blue Shield people, we enjoyed a great view of the swim start aboard The Osprey, marveling at the volunteers in kayaks, on paddleboards and jetskis. Before the morning was out one of those paddleboarders pulled an unconscious athlete from the water. The teen hero doesn't consider himself such, telling me that he did what anyone else out on the course would have done and preferred that I not use his name. Spoken like the selfless young man he is.

• Liz Montgomery volunteered with security on the last stretch before the finish and said that a guy on a bicycle with a dog on a leash breached the fencing and with police in pursuit managed to actually make it across the finish line. Pretty sure he didn't hear the announcer proclaim him an Ironman or receive a medal.

• Two fellow CHS Class of '70 classmates competed in Ironman. This is the year that we turn 60 so Rob Eachon and Steve Harding are doing the Class of '70 proud. Rob finished just before 10 p.m., with a couple of hours to spare.

Steve said things were going pretty well for him until about 40 miles into the 112-mile bike leg when he crashed into a volunteer. From there on he dealt with a sore shoulder and back spasms, jokingly but accurately describing it as a death march to the finish. He officially became an Ironman at 16:54.15, with just over five minutes until the stroke of midnight cut-off!

• Monday morning I was on my way to the radio station about five hours after the Ironman activities ended. Amazing that the entire downtown area had already been transformed to pre-event condition. Not a speck of trash, barricades or barriers to be seen. No evidence that thousands of people had congregated in a several block area for almost 24 hours. Kudos to the city of Coeur d'Alene and Ironman for making it all happen!

The final weekend of Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre's successful production of "Hello Dolly!" was a bit of a family reunion for "Dolly" herself, Ellen Travolta, when baby brother John and his wife, Kelly, came to visit.

And yes, Ian Waltz, the hometown boy made good, qualified for the U.S. Track and Field finals tomorrow at 6 p.m. The top three discus throwers on Thursday will earn a place on the USA Olympic team and a trip to London. Here's hoping Ian can add the U.K. to his passport stamps from the Athens and Bejing Olympic Games!

Looking forward to reprising my role as announcer in the skybox for the Coeur d'Alene American Heroes Parade on the Fourth of July ... also can't believe that is just one week from today!

LOLs from Facebook friends this week: Sarah Wilhelm, "There are so many summer interns walking around the office it's kinda starting to look like Bring Your Kid to Work Month;" and Julie Chadderdon, "It's so cold I had to put on a fleece jacket...indoors. I am calling this season wintmer."

Dani Zibell and Alan Wolfe married just over four years ago and are such a great match-up. Dani was a devotee of running and in the course of their marriage the couple have competed in four Bloomsdays, a number of 5Ks for charity, two duathlons, four half-marathons and over the weekend their very first marathon.
