SWIMMING

Sixty-eight swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team competed in the Summer Solstice Invitational on June 15-17 at Witter Pool in Spokane.

The meet brought nearly 400 athletes from around the Northwest, and CAST placed second.

Three local swimmers earned high point honors for their age groups: Bryce Kananowicz for the 15-and-over boys, Caleb Markowski for the 9-10 boys, and Rosie Loftus for the 8-and-under girls.

Several of their teammates placed in the top three in their age groups, including Hailey Pierce (3rd), Micah Hudlet (2nd), Cole Curtis (2nd), Nicole Rozier (2nd), Maggie de Tar (3rd), Ethan Cordes (3rd), and Joe Loftus (3rd). CAST swimmers combined for six first-place relays over the course of the weekend and multiple event winners.

For 11 CAST swimmers, it was their first meet in an Olympic-sized 50-meter pool. Those swimmers are John Bukowski, Dominick Ethridge, Penelope Gates, Thad Heuer, Lily Smith, Kristen Spiros, Andrew Thrasher, Katherine Thrasher, Hailey Upton, Beau Urbaniak and Taylen Zahnow.

CAST will next compete as a team at the Starlight Invitational in Wenatchee July 6-8, and will be sending Ben Lovell to Omaha for the US Olympic Trials on Saturday.

A handful of local players qualified for the Washington Junior Golf Association district tournament July 15-16 at Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman from a tournament June 18 at Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane.
