MERIDIAN - The St. Maries Lumberjacks did nearly everything they needed to do in order to extend their stay at the state 3A boys basketball tournament Friday.

But after trailing 30-22 at halftime, Bear Lake made 19 of 25 from the free-throw line in the second half to defeat the Lumberjacks 67-64 in a loser-out game at Meridian High.

"Free throws basically won it for them," St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said. "It wasn't that we were trying to foul; we went to a man-to-man defense trying to force some turnovers. They just got to the line and made their free throws."

Warren Joiner and Satchel Schetzle scored 17 points apiece for St. Maries, which finished 19-7.

"Our kids responded well after a tough loss last night," Wicks said. "It was just a tough game against a tough team."

The St. Maries Lumberjacks pulled down 25 offensive rebounds and shot 26 of 71 from the field. St. Maries graduates two starters and drops to the 2A classification next year.

“We really don’t know what to expect,” Wicks said. “We’ve got a good nucleus coming back and had a lot of juniors that got some playing time. There are some good teams in the 2A and it doesn’t get any easier because we’re moving down. We still need to get better. Hopefully some of those juniors got a taste of what state is like and it gives them some fire to come back.”

Porter Wallentine scored 19 points for Bear Lake (19-6), which faces Filer (19-5) in the consolation championship today. Filer beat Kellogg 48-46 in the other loser-out game.
