COEUR d'ALENE - Ten-year-old Nathan Lee plays the piano so well, it's as though he has already spent a lifetime training.

He hasn't, but that won't keep the Sammamish, Wash., native from wowing audiences when he plays Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27.

That's a promise from Coeur d'Alene Symphony, the program that puts on the National Young Artist Competition every year that crowned Lee one of its eight category winners out of roughly 150 applicants.

"He sounds like he's a professional already," said Robert Bittick, symphony producer. "You're going to be amazed."

There's also 15-year-old Nicole Oswald, a violinist out of Tigard, Ore., who, just like the others, Bittick expects to play professionally one day.

"Jaw-dropping," as he put it, not shying away on complimenting the up-and-coming talent that might have already arrived to the big time.

"You're going to hear them on television one day," Bittick said. "They're that good."

But before that, music lovers have a chance to catch them on stage at North Idaho College, as the eight winners perform individually with the Coeur d'Alene Symphony March 10.

The annual competition is in its 14th year, and boasts to be Idaho's only annual national competition. In 2003, only 16 local artists applied. This year it was 142.

"It was incredible just to judge," said Jill Cathey, principal oboe player in the symphony.

An amateur is in title only. While the musicians are young, their resumes list a bevy of accomplishments. Kristen Choi, all of 24, won the college vocal category, and after she makes her Coeur d'Alene debut, her singing schedule will take her to L.A.

Nicholas Villalobos, string bass winner from Tempe, has performed with the World Youth Symphony at Interlochen Arts Academy.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Schuler Auditorium.
