How to hire the right home-care agency

As our parents age, we begin to notice that they slow down and, at times, become a little more frail. We would like for them to retain their youth and independence as long as possible. However, there are moments when we realize that they are just as human as the rest of us and may need a little help from time to time. We would like to avoid, at all costs, placing them in a facility. Most people would agree that they would prefer to stay in their own home and live out their days as independent as possible. I know my mom was terrified to live the rest of her life in a facility. That is why there are agencies like Home Helpers.

When faced with such a decision, it is important to know what your options are and what questions to ask. Before taking steps to place a caregiver into your family's home, you must do your research. You wouldn't put "just anyone" with Mom or Dad.

So, if it is decided that the best option is to find care for them in-home, here is a list of important questions to ask a potential home care agency:

1) Does your agency carry liability coverage?

2) Do you check criminal backgrounds and driving records for all employees?

3) Are caregivers bonded and insured?

4) Do you have a systematic method for accurately tracking caregiver arrival and departure times?

5) Do you provide 24/7 on-call telephone service?

6) Does your service include Personal Care; such as bathing, incontinence care and mobility assistance at no additional cost?

7) Does your agency make periodic supervisory visits to a client's home?

8) Will your agency provide a free in-home assessment prior to starting service?

9) How soon can your agency begin service?

These are essential questions when searching for home-care assistance. Feel free to ask any other questions that come to mind. When it comes to your family, you can never be too careful.

Live a life worth following

A wise gentleman I knew once said that, "We should live a life worth following." When I heard this profound statement, I stopped to ponder the depth of its meaning. Do we all live a life worth following? How does that relate to the way we live and work in our daily lives? Would our children and grandchildren want to follow in our footsteps? Would we want them to?
