Auction generates act of kindness

MOSES LAKE - Spencer Kimbro didn't expect to get a dog when he went to the Youth Outdoors Unlimited (YOU) auction.

The 11-year-old boy was the first person accepted for Youth Outdoors Unlimited's hunting program last year, and participated in the recent auction. The organization takes terminally ill or physically disabled children hunting or fishing.

The five-and-a-half week old yellow Labrador retriever puppy was part of the live auction, and Spencer was watching it during the event, said Robin Kimbro, his mother.

"He met a lady outside and she was really interested in the way Spencer and the puppy were interacting," Robin said. "Spencer said to us, 'This lady wants to buy me this puppy.'"

When bidding on the package started, the woman Spencer met started bidding on it, and eventually won the item, she said. When the bidding finished at about $1,300, the woman announced she was giving the puppy to Spencer.

"It was just an overwhelming thing for someone to do that had never met him before that night," Robin said. "The interesting thing is Spencer is a pretty tough kid, and after getting the puppy and we handed the puppy to him, he left the room and just started crying. He just couldn't believe that somebody would be so kind. All he kept telling me is 'Mom that's a lot of money and she just gave him away.'"

The puppy package was one of 36 live auction items sold at the organization's second annual auction. Founder and President Cindy Carpenter said the group nearly doubled the amount of money they made last year.

"We sold out again. The house was full," she said. "These kids are the heroes. They deserve to be rewarded. We just honestly have the pleasure of helping them."

Carpenter said the funds raised from the auction will allow them to move forward with their plans for the next year. The group is planning on taking five children on hunting and fishing trips in 2012.

"We have several kids who are in the application process. There are two other local kids that are supposed to be sending applications in," she said. "Everybody that knows about YOU should be telling everybody they know to find a kid (with a terminal illness or physical disability) that wants to go on a hunt. That's our biggest challenge."

Carpenter added the group is seeking corporate sponsors.

The organization has been a boon for Spencer, Robin said. He went on his first hunt in Wilson Creek. During the hunt he became friends with Outdoor Channel cameraman Randy Burnworth.

"Randy told him that if he didn't get anything, that Randy would find him a place to hunt in the Spokane area," Robin said.

When they told Burnworth Spencer wasn't able to get a deer in October, the cameraman set up a second hunting trip in Spokane and the boy was able to get a three-point white tail, Robin said.

Spencer joined a basketball team at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane after a trip with Carpenter to speak to them about the organization.

"It's totally opened up doors for Spencer that we wouldn't have known about really ... It was very overwhelming," Robin said. "It's great to know there are so many people who are willing to help children with disabilities."
