An early morning law enforcement standoff with an apparently emotionally disturbed man at a Kings Point Road home in Lake County ended peacefully Monday.

Glen Smith, 67, was taken into custody at about 6 a.m. after holing up in the home with a high-powered rifle for nearly two hours.

The incident started at about 2:45 a.m. when the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report about an abandoned vehicle that was partially blocking Kings Point Road. The vehicle had been crashed, so law officers launched an effort to locate the registered owner.

That led to telephone contact with an out-of-state woman who said she had spoken with the owner and she feared he might be suicidal. Officers were able to locate the home occupied by Smith.

Deputies saw him inside the home holding the rifle. More officers were requested, a perimeter was established around the home and part of Kings Point Road was closed.

Officers from the Flathead Tribal Police and the Montana Highway Patrol also were involved and the Polson Ambulance was on standby.

At one point, officers heard four gunshots, but it is not clear whether the shots were being fired in the direction of law enforcement. At about 5:30 a.m., the Flathead County SWAT team was requested.

A short time later,  Smith was contacted and he was successfully talked out of  the house; the SWAT team request was canceled.
