QUINCY — A Quincy school bus rolled off state Route 281, near Road 5 Northwest, at about 8:20 a.m. today.

There were 37 students on board at the time of the accident, according to Quincy School District Superintendent Burton Dickerson.

“We are deeply concerned about the students and the driver,” Dickerson stated. “The safety of all our students is our top priority. Student safety is the number one job of our bus drivers.”

At least six students were injured and transported via ambulance to Quincy Valley Hospital, as was the school bus driver.

Injured students were transported to hospitals in Quincy, Ephrata and Moses Lake. Three students were reported in serious condition and one was reportedly transported from the scene of the crash via Medstar helicopter to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. The extent of the injuries was not released.

The bus appears to have drifted to the right side of the road. The Washington State Patrol reported the driver over corrected twice, causing the bus to leave the road on the right side. The bus rolled once and landed on the passenger side. It appears the students exited the rear door.

Grant County Fire District 3 crews responded along with dozens of Grant County sheriff’s deputies and state patrol troopers.

Several parents were at the scene soon after the crash occurred, reportedly alerted by students with cellphones.

A second school bus was used to transport some students from the scene.

Parents are asked to call the school district at 509-787-4571 for information about their children.

The Columbia Basin Herald continues to work on the story as information is released.
