QUINCY - Quincy is spending $110,000 for playground equipment in Lauzier Park.

The city council approved the plan to add the equipment to the park during a recent meeting. The project is being partially paid for by a 2009 grant from the Paul Lauzier Foundation.

The city received the $75,000 grant from the foundation to pay for a boundless playground, Mayor Jim Hemberry stated in a letter to the council.

"I feel it is necessary to fulfil our commitment before the city requests any additional funding for the amphitheater," he stated. "Installing the playground and the amphitheater are the final projects for the completion of Lauzier Park."

The city's sales tax revenue for the first two months of 2012 is at 75 percent of the amount projected for the year, Hemberry stated.

Recreation Director Russ Harrington received an email about purchasing playground equipment.

"At the very bottom of it was (an offer to) save 30 percent or get free installation on a big toy," he said. "I remembered from our Lauzier Grant in 2009 that installation was a pretty good chunk of money for those big toys."

The city needed to place the order with Everett-based SiteLines Park and Playground Products by March 15 to receive the offer, Harrington said. The playground will have ramps and mats allowing people in wheelchairs access to the equipment.

"There are play events on all the different levels for kids in wheelchairs to play alongside non-handicapped kids," he said. "We think it would be a great addition."

The company's initial estimate for the equipment was about $70,000. Harrington said the additional money would go toward items such as crushed gravel to go underneath the mats and a concrete curb to hold the mats in place.
