SPOKANE - J. J. Raterink threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Marco Thomas in overtime to lead the Iowa Barnstormers past the Spokane Shock 69-63 in the Arena Football League opener for both teams Monday night before 8,891 at the Spokane Arena.

Tied at 63, Spokane backup quarterback Adam Froman tried to connect with receiver Adron Tennell, who bobbled the pass and Iowa's Jason Simpson came up with the interception to pave the way for the game-winning drive.

Shock quarterback Eric Meyer was injured in the fourth quarter on a helmet-to-helmet hit by the Barnstomers' John Mohring. The penalty handed Spokane a first down inside the Iowa 10, and Froman came off the bench to throw a touchdown with just over a minute left, bringing Spokane to within 63-56.

Tennell tried to come down with the ensuing onside kick, but Iowa was able to secure it. Spokane had to use timeouts to stop the clock in an effort to get the ball back. After a long incompletion, Iowa tried a field goal which went wide left, and the Shock's Terrance Sanders returned it for a touchdown. The extra point tied it at 63 with 27 seconds left.

Spokane travels to San Antonio on Saturday.
