KINGS POINT — Following an early-morning standoff involving several local law enforcement agencies, officers apprehended 67-year-old Glen Smith from his home on Kings Point Road near Polson Monday morning.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an abandoned motor vehicle call on Kings Point Road at 2:44 a.m., Monday. The vehicle was still partially on the road and had visible property damage, but Smith, the owner of the vehicle, was nowhere in sight.

According to a press release from Sheriff Jay Doyle, officers’ attempts to contact Smith by phone were initially unsuccessful, however, they were able to reach a woman who reported that she had received a call from Smith and thought he may be suicidal.

Officers from Flathead Tribal Police, Montana Highway Patrol and the LCSO arrived at Smith’s Kings Point residence around 4:18 a.m. where they reported seeing a male inside the home, holding a high-powered rifle, Doyle said.

Additional officers responded to the scene, establishing a perimeter and shutting down portions of Kings Point Road as precautionary measures. Polson Ambulance was on standby in the vicinity.

“While near the residence, officers heard four shots being fired,” Doyle said in the press release. “It is not clear at this time whether the shots were being fired in the direction of the officers or not.”

At 5:28 a.m., Flathead County SWAT was called to assist officers on scene, but that request was cancelled as Smith was talked out of the house and taken into custody “without incident” a short time later.
