ROYAL CITY - If you notice a girl who seems out of place at the Royal City Distinguished Young Woman competition this Saturday evening, she will be, sort of.

Brooke Roylance of Othello High School will be on the same stage competing for the title of Othello DYW. Othello does not have its own DYW event this year.

This all came about when people representing three girls from Othello asked Royal City DYW Chairman Tina Solis for help. They suggested a combined pageant.

"Comments were made that having both programs at the same time would be a good source of revenue for our local program," Solis said.

Several alternatives were considered, Solis said. In the end it was decided that the Othello DYW would be independent and piggyback on the Royal program.

"They are responsible for their own scholarships and fees associated with having a program," Solis said.

After all was said and done, only one girl from Othello signed up. She will not be an automatic winner of a DYW crown, however.

Roylance will be judged against the same criteria as the Royal girls but not against the Royal girls. Her scores will determine if she moves forward to represent Othello at the state DYW competition.

Roylance, 16, is the daughter of Ronald and Jeanette Roylance. She plans to attend Brigham Young University-Provo and major in elementary education.

Roylance is active in volleyball, honor society, junior class secretary, club volleyball, tennis, book club and church youth group activities.
