COEUR d'ALENE - One week after announcing he would not run for sheriff as he had recently planned, North Idaho businessman Adam M. Johnson was behind bars in Kootenai County.

Johnson, 28, of Coeur d'Alene, was arrested Wednesday for technical violations of his probation, said Jeff Ray, a spokesman for the Idaho Department of Correction in Boise.

Johnson was ordered to serve seven days discretionary jail time, Ray said.

He said the violation wasn't significant enough for Johnson to go before a judge.

Johnson was instructed to turn himself in to the jail, and he complied, Ray said.

In December, Johnson pleaded guilty to a felony heroin possession charge. At sentencing a month later, he received what's called a "withheld judgment," giving him an opportunity to get the case dismissed if he completed two years of supervised probation without violations.

Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh issued a written opinion saying Johnson couldn't run for public office until his felony conviction was cleared.

Johnson initially planned to challenge McHugh's opinion in court, but last week decided against doing so.

Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes asked McHugh to weigh in on the question before Johnson decided to file.

Johnson was charged in Kootenai County in connection with a high-profile shooting in downtown Coeur d'Alene in December 2009.

His shots sent two Moses Lake, Wash., men to the hospital, one of whom was life-flighted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

An altercation between Johnson and a group of Moses Lake men broke out around midnight Dec. 27 on Sherman Avenue prior to the shooting. Johnson maintained he was attacked by the group and fired the shots out of self-defense, while the victims maintained Johnson was the aggressor, looking to confront the group after a verbal altercation earlier in the evening inside the downtown dance club, the Underground.

Attempted murder and aggravated battery charges from that incident were dropped following a sealed grand jury, but Johnson was sentenced to 10 days in jail for carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence, a misdemeanor.

Johnson has told The Press he plans to take a shot at becoming the county's top cop in 2016.
