Lucy Elizabeth Gould Barron, passed away March 11, 2012. Born Nov. 1, 1915, in Flint, Mich., to Jay Gould and Nellie Myrtle Christner Gould.
She married Donald Gordon Barron on Dec. 19, 1941. Their love story continued until his death in 2008. Don and Lucy moved from Grand Rapids, Mich., to Coeur d’Alene in 1989 and together they enjoyed traveling the Northwest and could often be seen taking long walks through the city which usually began with coffee and conversation at their favorite “hangout,” Java on Sherman.
Lucy loved libraries and volunteered at both the East Grand Rapids and Coeur d’Alene libraries. She was also instrumental in starting and maintaining the library when she resided at Oak Crest. She also volunteered for St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, the American Cancer Society and was a blood donor. Lucy retired from Old Kent Bank in 1978.
Lucy had a lively curiosity and loved learning about the areas she visited, particularly the natural history. She had a mischievous sense of humor with which she delighted her family and friends and will always be remembered by her children for her sage advice including, “If you’re going to be snoopy, you’d better be sneaky!”
Lucy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Diane Barron of Worley; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Mike McCarthy of Tulsa; their grandsons, Donald Jay Barron of Spokane, Colin O’Leary of Warsaw, Ind., and Neil O’Leary of Tempe, Ariz.; and her sisters-in-law, Grace Bosch of Flushing, Mich., and Elizabeth Barron of Swartz Creek, Mich.; as well as many well-loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Lucy was preceded in death by her brother, William J. Gould.
Lucy’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Bridge at Garden Plaza and to Dr. Richard McLandress for their loving care and friendship.
