Bradford Burgess hit a key 3-pointer with 1:33 left and Shaka Smart coached VCU to another tournament surprise, holding off Wichita State 62-59 in the South Regional on Thursday.

The 12th-seeded Rams (29-6) led by as many as 13 in the second half, but the Shockers (26-6) closed to 54-53 on Garrett Stutz's layup with 5:39 left. Troy Daniels hit a 3-pointer for the Rams, and Joe Ragland answered with his own for Wichita State.

Toure Murry made a 3 that gave Wichita State the lead, but Burgess came back with his big shot to give the Rams a 60-59 edge. Darius Theus' runner from about six feet provided the final margin.

VCU plays Indiana on Saturday.

Indiana 79, New Mexico State 65: Jordan Hulls went on a second-half shooting spree and finished with 22 points, and the fourth-seeded Hoosiers (26-8) rolled past New Mexico State (26-10).

Louisville 69, Davidson 62: Peyton Siva scored 17 points and the fourth-seeded Cardinals beat Davidson (25-8) for their first tournament victory since 2009.

After getting ousted in their opening game the past two seasons, coach Rick Pitino and the Cardinals (27-9) advanced to the third round of the West Regional. Louisville, coming off a surprising run to the Big East tournament title, is making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAAs.

The Cardinals will play New Mexico on Saturday.

New Mexico 75, Long Beach State 68: Kendall Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and bottled up Long Beach State (25-9) star Casper Ware defensively to help fifth-seeded New Mexico (28-6) hold on for a victory in the West Regional.

Drew Gordon added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Lobos.

Murray State 58, Colorado State 41: Isaiah Canaan is making the most of his do-over.

Two years after fumbling away Murray State's (31-1) chance at being the mid-major darlings of the NCAA tournament, Canaan scored 15 points and backcourt mate Donte Poole added 13 points to make sure they'd stick around for a while in a victory over Colorado State (20-12).

As a freshman, Canaan was crushed after he mishandled the ball in the closing seconds of a two-point loss to Butler in the second round.

Murray State moves on to play third-seeded Marquette in the West Regional on Saturday.

Marquette 88, BYU 68: Jae Crowder finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds, Darius Johnson-Odom had 12 of his 20 points in the second half and Marquette (26-7) withstood a furious BYU rally.

Brandon Davies had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the 14th-seeded Cougars (26-9).

Kentucky 81, Western Kentucky 66: Terrence Jones had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Doron Lamb scored 16 and top-seeded Kentucky (33-2) began its quest for an eighth national title with a staggering display of athleticism in a victory over Western Kentucky (16-19).

Freshman and player of the year candidate Anthony Davis added 16 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks for Kentucky, which was never seriously threatened.

Kentucky plays Iowa State on Saturday.

Iowa State 77, Connecticut 64: Chris Allen led four Cyclones (23-10) in double figures with 20 points and Iowa State scored its last 14 at the free-throw line to beat Connecticut (20-14), the first time since UCLA in 1996 that the defending champs have lost in the opening game.

* At Albuquerque, N.M.

Wisconsin 73, Montana 49: Ryan Evans scored 18 points and Jordan Taylor added 17 points and six assists for Wisconsin, which ended Montana's (25-7) school-record 14-game winning streak.

The fourth-seeded Badgers (25-9) improved to 10-1 in NCAA tournament openers under Bo Ryan, the winningest coach in the program's history.

Wisconsin will face Vanderbilt in the next round of the East Regional on Saturday at the Pit.

Vanderbilt 79, Harvard 70: John Jenkins made all six of his late free throws and scored 27 points to help Vanderbilt (25-10) hold off Harvard (26-5) in an East Regional game.

Baylor 68, South Dakota State 60: Pierre Jackson scored 18 points and Baylor (28-7) held off 14th-seeded South Dakota State (27-8).

Baylor will play Colorado on Saturday.

Colorado 68, UNLV 64: Freshman reserve Askia Booker scored 16 points and Andre Roberson had 12 points and 16 rebounds, helping Colorado (24-11) fight off a furious UNLV (26-9) comeback.

* At Pittsburgh

Kansas State 70, Southern Mississippi 64: Rodney McGruder scored 30 points and Jordan Henriquez added 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocks to lead Kansas State over Southern Miss (25-9).

The Wildcats (22-10) advanced past their opening tournament game for the third straight year and will face Syracuse in the third round Saturday.

Syracuse 72, UNC-Asheville 65: Reserve James Southerland had 15 points and a season-high eight rebounds and Syracuse (32-2) avoided becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16 when it rallied for a victory over UNC-Asheville (24-10) in the East Regional.

Ohio State 78, Loyola-Md. 59: Deshaun Thomas scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead second-seeded Ohio State (28-7) past the Greyhounds (24-9) in the East Regional.

Ohio State plays Gonzaga on Saturday.
