QUINCY - Othello hopped on the bus Tuesday to take on Quincy in a non-league match and came away with a  3-2 shoot-out win. The victory improved the Huskies to 3-0  in non-league play and puts the team at the top of the CWAC standings.

"We are undefeated for this young season and it looks good on paper," coach Bernie Garza said. "But it doesn't really mean anything if we don't continue with the same thing we are doing when league play begins."

Defense reigned supreme for the first 38 minutes of the match until the Huskies Jorge Campos rocketed home the first goal  from 40-yard out off an assist by Ociel Romero to give Othello a 1-0 lead. The score held up through intermission, much to the dismay of the  Quincy faithful.

"We got off to a good start taking several shots at the Quincy goalie  in the first 20 minutes of play, but we couldn't find the back of the net," Garza said.  "We finally got on the board after we stole the ball in the midfield and Jorge made a run towards the Quincy defenders as they were pushing up.  Ociel  sent a great through pass splitting the defense and Jorge was off to the races with nobody between him and the goal but the goalie.  Jorge took a right footed shot  to the goalies right side and he dove to make the save but missed.  It was a well-placed shot and with power."

The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal by  Fredy Augustin (Miguel Penaloza), at the 50  minute-mark.

"I made some substitutions for injured players after the goal and then it got ugly as some of the Quincy players started to lose their composure and were taking out their frustrations on us by fouling our guys multiple times," Garza said. "The referee finally ejected two of their players but didn't issue a red card ."

The aggressive play, Garza said, turned the momentum in the Jacks favor as Quincy scored two unanswered goals by Eduardo Perez at the 75th minute of action and a penalty kick by Rey Cabrera three minutes later to tie the score 2-2.

The Huskies keeper Martel Saucedo got his hand on Cabrera's shot, but deflected the ball wide and it bounced off the side post and back to Cabrera and he found the back of the net for the score.

Neither team scored in the last two minutes and the matched ended tied in regulation play, sending the game into overtime. After two five minute sudden death periods, the match was still knotted and the teams lineup for a penalty kick shoot-out. The Huskies and Jacks connected on three shots each to force a second shoot-out.

"Martel blocked their kick in the sudden death shoot out and our sixth shooter Jose Hernandez calmly passed it in for the victory," Garza said. "Quincy is a much improved team from a year ago and will contend this year for the top spot in the CWAC North. But they'll have to go through us to do it."

Next up for the Huskies is another non-league match against Selah at home Saturday at noon. Othello begins league play Tuesday when they host the Prosser Mustangs at 6 p.m.
