COEUR d'ALENE - You see a utility box, but artists look at it as a canvas.

The city of Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission is seeking artists for its latest project, Utility Box Beautification, which, just as its name indicates, will transform block, gray utility boxes into works of art.

The goal is to enhance the visual landscape and character of the city where you might otherwise not expect.

"It turns ordinary spaces into community landmarks and promotes community dialogue and, most importantly, it's accessible to everyone," a press release announcing the call to artists said.

Six utility boxes, which keep lights flashing and communications running, will become canvasses for artists, graphic designers, photographers, illustrators or anyone with imagination looking to display their artwork.

The winning designs will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around the boxes.

Public art can be a change agent for the community. It creates and enhances neighborhood and community identity, the release stated.

Studies show that once a box is decorated, graffiti incidents on the box drop dramatically, the Arts Commission said. The boxes are primarily around the downtown. Artist will get $600 per box.

Information packets are available online at City Hall, 710 E. Mullan Ave., or online at www.cdaid.org. Artist proposals are due by 5 p.m., April 20. Info: Steve Anthony, Arts Commission Liaison, at 769-2249.
