MOSES LAKE - The Riverhawks were looking to steal a win on the road and get the upper hand in Big Nine soccer action Saturday.
But Moses Lake would have none of it as the Chiefs turned back Chiawana 2-1 in overtime.
The match saw the teams butt heads for the first 18 minutes of action as each were held off the scoreboard.
The Riverhawks drew first blood on a goal that was obstructed when a Chief defended crossed in front of goalkeeper Luis Villa on a cross-kick, who lost site of the ball as it rolled past him into the net.
That was the only score in the first half of play. It took 19 minutes of second half action before the Chiefs tied the score 1-1 at the 59 minute-mark on a 10-yard rocket by A.J. Montes, off an assist by Sean Cotton.
Neither team found the box over the next 21 minutes of play and the game ended knotted at the end of regulation to force the overtime period.
It didn't take long to determine the outcome as the Chiefs Adolfo Cortez found the back of the net from 20 yards out off an assist by Derrick Gonzales for the win.
"I thought we dealt with their speed very well today, and when we decided to shoot, the balls went in," coach Bill Bertram said. "Adolfo and A.J. each had a heck of a game and finished their opportunities in great form. And Tyler Courtright and Martin Cortez anchored a very good defensive effort. They were both composed and anticipated the flow of play extremely well."
Villa had four saves for the Chiefs. Chiawana recorded eight. The win puts Moses Lake at 1-0 in league play.
The Chiefs are back on the pitch Saturday when they travel to Marquette Stadium in Yakima to match up with Eisenhower.
