Courtney Kunjara, the Chiefs No. 1 singles, hits a backhand volley to her opponent from Sunnyside.

MOSES LAKE - A cold windy spring morning greeted the Chiefs and Grizzlies as the teams went head-to-head in tennis Saturday in Moses Lake.

The weather proved to be more of a foe for the Chiefs as the boys and girls teams had little trouble dispatching Sunnyside.

Levi Huddleston, the No. 1 singles players got things going for the Chiefs with a two set win, 6-1, 6-1 over Javier Aguliar.

The No. 2 singles Josh Black followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Daniel Guillen. Tyler Knapp, Moses Lake's No. 3 singles beat Scott Laverman 6-2, 6-0, and the Mo. 4 singles Jace Hunt got by Iran Brambilia in two sets 6-3, 6-4.

The Chiefs doubles teams found the going fairly easy as well as they won all three of their matches.

The No. 1 doubles Tierman Hall and Drew Perez turned back Jacob Martin and Jovanny Martinez in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Nolan Knapp and Matt Schafer downed Zach Halma and Nathan Laverman 6-2, 6-3, and the No. 3 singles Jordan Earl and Marco Sanchez beat Matthew Grongora and Mario Zarazua 6-2, 6-0.

"We had some issues staying on opponents who can not stay with us on the court in Yakima this past week," coach Jon Wrigley said. "So it was good to see the lesson learned as we did a good job staying at a high level against Sunnyside until the match was done."

Girls

No. 1 singles Courtney Kunjara (6-2, 6-1) and the No. 1 doubles team of Becca Byam and Annalise Odegaard (6-1, 6-3) got the girls on track with early wins over their opponents. And their teammates keep the momentum rolling for Moses Lake as the Chiefs won all of their matches too.

Alyssa Tucker, the No. 2 singles beat Elexix Lepe, 6-2, 6-0, the No. 3 singles Ece Yilmaz shutout Vanessa Serna, 6-0, 6-0, and Juli Medel, the No. 4 singles defeated Itzel Lopez in two sets 7-5, 6-2.

The Chiefs No. 2 singles Marki Koreis and Kylee McKay blanked Ashley Foster and Yarely Gomez 6-0, 6-0, and the No. 3 doubles Yasline Daoust and Sierra Gallaway turned back Jasmine Lopez and Roxy Placante 6-2, 6-0.

"Both teams were short a few players in this match," Wrigley said. "It was nice to see a few of our girls move into the varsity ladder and find success."

Falcons 4

Chiefs 3

MOSES LAKE - The second match of the day saw Moses Lake boys host Hanford. Unfortunately, the home team didn't have the same success against the Falcons as they did with the Grizzles, as Handford took four of seven games.

The Falcons put the pressure on the Chiefs at the onset, taking the first two singles and doubles matches. Levi Huddleston, Moses Lake's No. 1 singles lost to Luke Thompson in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Josh Black, the No. 2 singles dropped his match to Shane Sandlin 6-1, 6-2.

But the Chiefs bounced back with wins by No. 3 singles Tyler Knapp, who defeated Shawn Thompson 6-1, 7-5, and No. 4 singles Cody Jones, who stopped Mukthi Kakkadupu 6-1, 6-2.

The Chiefs No. 1 doubles Tierman Hall and Drew Perez dropped their match to Quinto Dicken and Darko Stankovic, 6-2, 6-4. Tyler McFarland and Matt Schafer, the No. 2 singles lost to Paul Hanna and Cameron Sullivan in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Moses Lake's No. 3 doubles Jordan Earl and Marco Sanchez beat Macade Bel and Venkentish Varda, 6-1, 6-0.

"We have never been able to get by Hanford, which has been a top team that produces state level players every year," coach Jon Wrigley said. "We showed our depth and we were really close to finally beating them. It came down to our second doubles ... the effort and desire was there ... we just fell a bit short on execution."

Girls

The girls teams were never really in the competition with Handford as they didn't win one set in the afternoon match.

The closets Moses Lake came to a victory was in the No. 1 doubles game between Becca Byam and Annalise Odegaard, who lost to Bridget Gaulant and Christina Xie in three sets, 7-5 (6-7)(4),6-7(11).

"We ran into a well prepared group ... they have too many kids that spend time at the Columbia Basin Racket Club," Wrigley said. "But we had our opportunities in doubles. We saw some fatigue kick in as we were playing our second match and we were the only one on the schedule for them. We will continue to focus on building our fitness level, so we can be ready for the long days during the post season."

Moses Lake is back on the court tomorrow when the team travels to Richland to face the Bombers in CBBN action.

"The boys have never beaten Richland," Wrigley said. "But we are looking forward to the challenge."
