Java on Sherman
Java is one of those places where you feel good just walking in. As chains and franchises proliferate, a local latte hangout which has survived, even thrived as a favorite haunt for 19 years at 324 Sherman Ave. in Coeur d’Alene is a precious remnant of what threatens to become memory. How that’s been accomplished is a little esoteric, best exemplified by how owner Dave Patterson sees his work.
“Latte art is an art form. It is very fragile; you pour the drink and it is gone in 10 minutes. Yet you look forward to the next one… It is a beautiful thing, it is an art, it is a craft. It is a constant challenge and for people to recognize it is an absolute blessing.”
“It” is also a smart business model. Java is open late, if nonspecifically. Posted hours are somewhat flexible after dark, more dependent upon how long customers linger, especially on nights when local musicians perform. That has helped make Java more than morning breakfast (far beyond muffins and bagels, think lox, homemade soups, and pancakes) or afternoon buzz, but a living-room atmosphere and safe hangout.
Patterson (who prefers simply, “Dave”) is a former Starbucks employee who had a different vision for the barista vista. He strives to make Java an age-free nexus for all.
“The people, the community, a community hub for people to get in touch. The 85-year-old sitting next to a couple in their 30s with three kids, sitting next to a 17-year-old with a six-inch mohawk. Peaceful coexistence.”
Not that Dave and Java staff don’t take their business seriously.
“People say that if you go to downtown Coeur d’Alene you need to have a hamburger at Hudson’s, visit Figpickels toy store, and enjoy a Bowl of Soul at Java. That is an honor and responsibility.”
Try a Bowl of Soul — like a Mexican mocha (208) 667-0010 or check out Java on Sherman on Facebook.
