As I sit here writing this article, the snow is once again falling. My thick socks are back on, and I find myself digging out the warm hat and gloves I packed up just 24 hours earlier. Yes, that brief moment of warm sunshine and T-shirt weather has been replaced with the all too familiar snow and rain we have come to expect this season.

Although I would like nothing more than to close the drapes, turn up the heat and sleep until the sun decides to stay for good, I'm happy that we at least were able to enjoy one full day of spring bliss. Hopefully, everyone took advantage of the high temperatures by enjoying the outdoors and doing some spring cleaning. We were finally able to barbecue outside without wearing rain gear or ski gloves, and rustled up some tasty steak kabobs and grilled vegetables.

This marinade is great for grilling on the barbecue. It combines brown sugar and a splash of whiskey to create a sweet, smoky finish on the grill.

Steak Kabobs

Marinade:

4 Tbsp barbecue sauce

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 Tbsp whiskey

2 Tbsp brown sugar

2 tsp garlic powder

3 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp black pepper

*Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Mix well and pour into a large ziplock bag.

*Cube three to four petite sirloin steaks and place in bag with marinade.

*Marinate in fridge for 4-6 hours. Take out of fridge 1 hour prior to grilling.

*Remove from bag and place on skewers.

*Grill on medium to high heat for about 5 minutes turning often.

*Remove from grill and let sit for 1 minute before serving.

Helpful Hints:

*Soak wood skewers in water for 1 hour before using (this will keep them from burning on the grill)

*Grilled onions, zucchini and mushrooms go great with steak!

*This marinade is also great on flank steak.

*This recipe serves 6.

Inventiveness with green beans

It's a constant challenge to come up with fresh and interesting sides to go with traditional dishes. However, even if someone is a "meat and potatoes" kind of eater, there's always room for a little inventiveness when it comes to flavoring a seemingly bland, take as little as possible portion, springtime vegetable.

Relax with an easy breakfast

This weekend was a great time to get together with friends and family and enjoy the wonderful weather Idaho has to offer. The hum of lawnmowers and weed eaters echoed throughout the entire neighborhood. When it's this nice outside, one of my favorite things to do is get up early, grab a hot cup of coffee and sit outside reading the newspaper, and listening as the rest of the town awakens and prepares for the day.
