Nordic fundraiser

The North Shore Nordic Club will hold its annual spring fundraising “Thanks for the snow party” at the Garden Bar, in Bigfork, on Friday, March 30, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the Bad Larrys playing from 7 to 9 p.m. Great Northern Foods will provide a free chili and cornbread dinner. A suggested donation is $10 per person. The North Shore Nordic Club grooms two Nordic ski trail systems — the Blacktail Mountain Nordic Ski Trails and the Bigfork Community Nordic Ski Trails.

Freezout Lake trip

Flathead Audubon will lead a birding trip led by Dan Casey to Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area to witness the spring waterfowl migration on Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1. Freezeout Lake is south of Choteau near the Rocky Mountain Front. Birders may observe snow geese, en route to Arctic nesting grounds numbering 100,000 or more, as well as thousands of swans and many ducks and more than 40 other bird species. Freezout Lake class

The Glacier Institute will present wildlife course titled “White Goose Migration at Freezout Lake” on March 31 through April 1 led by Mike Schwitters. Participants will observe the spring migration of lesser snow and Ross’s geese at the Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area, the primary migration staging area for birds which move in the hundreds of thousands through the Pacific Flyway each spring. Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
