Wallet stuffed with cash lost in Cd'A

"Hey buddy, is this your wallet?"

Apparently it wasn't, but a yes answer was worth a few grand.

According to a Coeur d'Alene police report, a Utah man visiting relatives left his wallet containing $3,000 on a table in an Appleway convenience store Thursday afternoon.

When he returned about 20 minutes later, the clerk first said he had not seen a wallet.

"Then the clerk said he had found a wallet on one of the dining tables near where an older man was sitting," the report said. "He asked the man if it was his wallet and he said it was and the clerk returned the wallet to the man."

The store employee told police he found the wallet on a table about 7 feet from where an elderly man was seated.

"Hey buddy, is this your wallet?" he said.

The man replied, "Oh, thank you so much," the report said.

The employee gave the wallet to the man "without thinking to check the identification in the wallet," the report said.

The man who accepted the wallet was about 70 and using a cane.

The clerk told police he "could not remember if he had seen this man in the store in the past."
