NIC newspaper, staff named as award finalists

The NIC Sentinel newspaper and three of its staff members have been named national finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists 2011 Mark of Excellence Awards.

This year, student journalists submitted more than 4,000 entries. SPJ judges chose one national winner in each category and two national finalists (runners-up).

The Sentinel was named a national finalist in the category of Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper.

Gabe Green of Vancouver, Wash., won in the news photography category, Tala Wood of Sandpoint won in the general news reporting category and Catherine Mullaney of Post Falls won in the feature photography category.

Pesticides can be disposed on May 9 in Cd'A

COEUR d'ALENE - Agricultural producers, dealers, applicators and homeowners who have unusable pesticides will have a safe, legal and free opportunity to dispose of them on May 9 at the Coeur d'Alene transfer station, 3950 Ramsey Road.

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture's collection station will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participation is free for the first 1,000 pounds per participant. Fertilizer, micronutrients, paint, solvents and motor oil cannot be accepted under the program.
