WRESTLING
Locals shine: The 2012 Idaho Kids Freestyle and Greco Roman state tournament was April 27-28 at Skyline High in Idaho Falls.
The Lakeland Wrestling Club had five wrestlers claim state medals, Post Falls' Team Real Life captured four and Coeur d'Alene's Buzzsaw Wrestling Club three.
Lakeland's Alex Edelblute was undefeated and grabbed two state championship titles in both freestyle and Greco in the intermediate 65-pound wieght class. Colton Boettcher was also undefeated and became Idaho's intermediate 75-pound champion in both styles with a last-second takedown to win his championship freestyle match. Larry Johnson claimed his third state championship of the 2011-12 season. Johnson previously won the folksytle state championship late in 2011 and by winning both freestyle and Greco he claimed Idaho's prestigious triple crown award. Sam Edelblute beat Destin Summers of Blackfoot on Friday to win the Novice 65-pound division. Summers got his revenge and edged out Edelblute for the freestyle championship, forcing Sam to take home the silver. The Greco-Roman bronze medal in the Novice 70-pound division went to Lakeland's Tavis Woempner, who went on to place fourth in freestyle.
Real Life's Belane Huber placed second in both Greco and freestyle in the Intermediate 55-pound class. Her older brother Braden Huber placed third in Greco and second in freestyle. Ridge Lovett captured two championships in the Novice 75-pound division. Jason Burchell was the lone Novice 102-pounder and received a pair of gold medals.
Buzzsaw's Marion Peregrina captured the Greco championship in the schoolboy 112-pound class and got the silver medal in freestyle. Kaleb Maciosek placed fifth in both styles in the schoolboy 77-pound division. Kade Lincoln took home two first place medals in the schoolboy 70-pound division.
LITTLE LEAGUE
Upper Minors: The Post Falls Rockies traveled to Rathdrum and beat the Lakeland Royals 19-13 in interleague play. Lane Babowicz got the win, striking out four in three innings. Derek Pearse went 2 for 2 with a triple, single, walk and three runs scored, and Lane Babowicz went 2 for 2 with a double, single and a walk.

Coeur d'Alene Sting under-11 boys (Barcelona): The Sting defeated Moscow United (Mortimer) 7-0. Keaton Murphree scored three goals, Spencer Messina two, and Cameron Johnson and Joey Fraser scored one each. Aidan Hassell had four saves in posting the shutout in goal.
Sting U10 girls Timbers: The Timbers lost to the Sounders last Saturday at Hayden Meadows. Zoe Cox and Samantha Veare each scored a goal for the Timbers.
Lakeland Nighthawks U13 girls (Cater): The Nighthawks beat the Spokane Sabers (Taylor) 5-0 in WSYSA District 6 play Saturday at Mt. Spokane High. Monica Higbee, Ashley Boettcher, Harley Hendry, Allison Kirby and Shannon Frucci each scored once, and Ashley Boettcher, Harley Hendry and Shannon Frucci each had assists. Keelie Lawler posted the shutout in goal for the Nighthawks (5-0-1).
Nighthawks U15 boys (McDevitt): The Nighthawks tied the Coeur d'Alene Sting Gold last Thursday at Rotary Field in Rathdrum in IYSA District 1 play. Daniel McDevitt and Auston Henry each scored once for the Nighthawks, and Collin Millette had an assist. Cade Coffey saved a penalty kick.
Nighthawks U13 boys (McDevitt): The Nighthawks beat the Storm FC (Frantilla) 3-1 in WSYSA District 6 Umbro league play last Thursday in Cheney. Brandon Lycan scored two goals, Tommy Krivanek one for the Nighthawks. Tommy Krivanek, Cody Callahan and Dade McDevitt each had one assist.
On Saturday, the Nighthawks tied the Spokane Breakers (Davey) 1-1 at Rotary Field. Brandon Lycan scored the lone goal for the Nighthawks (6-1-0).
Nighthawks U10 girls (Higbee): The Nighthawks beat Moscow (Rogel) 10-0 in IYSA Northwest League play Saturday at Betty Kiefer Elementary in Rathdrum. Makenna Smith scored five goals, Zoe Potter four and Marriah Piazza one for the Nighthawks. Darby McDevitt, Amy Palmer and Julieanna Stith each had one assist. Brianna Christensen and Ashley Toledo teamed for the shutout in goal for the Nighthawks (3-0-0).
Sting U10 girls Sounders: The Sounders beat the Sting Timbers 4-2 last Saturday. Jordan Roth scored two goals for the Sounders and Shelby Sharp and Chloe Miller each scored once.
Sting U12 boys (Josten): The Sting fell 2-1 to the Ephrata Tigers on April 21. Tyler Mueller scored the lone goal for the Sting. The Sting then battled the Shadow United FC Denman on April 28 to a 3-3 tie. Sam Frederickson scored two goals, Shawn McKeekan one for the Sting.
Sting U12 girls (Muravez): The Sting won three games last weekend, getting goals from Lauryn Trueblood, Erika Boifeuillet, Marie Michalson and Marley Cowin.
Sting U10 boys Arsenal: The Sting beat Lewiston (Shug) and Lewiston (Simone) on April 14. Tyler Shaw scored seven goals, Cameron Dance three, Caden Hess two, Carter Gordon three, Lance Riley five, Nicholas Litterell two, Cameron Mason one, Jackson Gatten two, Connor Norris two.
They also beat Moscow (Brooks) and Moscow (Rezamand) on April 21. Tyler Shaw scored four goals, Cameron Dance three, Caden Hess three, Lance Riley one, Cameron Mason one, Owen Smith two. Tyler Shaw had two assists, and Cameron Mason, Connor Norris, Caden Hess and Lance Riley had one each.

Sting U10 boys (Fulham): The Sting edged the Lakeland Nighthawks (Mooney) 6-5 on April 21 at Hayden Meadows. Drake Prohaska scored four goals, and Sam Anderson two.
Sting U15 girls (Hogan): The Sting beat the River City Shock (Selle) 2-0 in a WSYSA District 6 League game called at halftime due to lightning. Madeline Roberts and Rachel Johnson scored, with assists from Alissa Jolliff and Rylie Lyman. Tiegan Horton had one save.
The Sting also beat 3 Rivers SC 96 Alvarado 8-0. Megan Lowery had a hat trick, Meaghan Bare two goals and Rebekah Brendis, Emily Lorbecki and Sarah Lambert scored once each. Meaghan Bare, Megan Lambert, Emily Lorbecki and Natalie Wheelock each had assists. Tiegan Horton had two saves in the shutout.
Idaho Thunder U9 boys (Sater): The Thunder beat RIA-Tesarik 10-1 in league play April 21 at Andrew Rypien Field in Spokane. Andrew Ferreira scored six goals and Braden Ferreira, Aidan O'Halloran, Aiden Juntilla and Jake Slaton each scored once. Kyle Sater had three assists, Braden Ferreira two and Aiden O'Halloran one.
Also that day, the Thunder tied SOJ Bryant 3-3 at Andrew Rypien Field. Aidan O'Halloran, Braden Ferreira and Andrew Ferreira each scored once and Carson Jacobsen and Kyle Sater both had one assist.

AAU BASKETBALL
The Running Rebels AAU Basketball Club will be hosting a skills and drills clinic for prospective players on next year's teams.
The Running Rebels is an elite AAU boys basketball program that will have teams consisting of third/fourth graders, a fifth-grade team and a sixth-grade team (for the 2012-13 school year).
The clinic will be May 14 and 15 at Mullan Trail Elementary in Post Falls. Grades 3 and 4 will meet from 6 to 7:15 p.m., grades 5 and 6 will meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.

BASEBALL
Future Viking Day: The Coeur d'Alene High baseball program is inviting all local Little League players, coaches and volunteers to its Future Viking Day on Monday at 4 p.m. at Coeur d'Alene High's Ted Page Field. The Vikings will host a 5A Region 1 tournament semifinal game that day.
The goal is to develop a relationship with future Viking players and encourage attendance at Viking home games. Little League players who attend will receive a free Viking baseball T-shirt. Players and coaches in attendance will be recognized during the game.

Baseball, softball signups: Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department youth baseball and slowpitch softball registration for ages 5-13 is May 1-11. Games are held Monday-Thursday evenings. Practices begin the week of June 11, games begin the week of June 27.
Registration is at the Coeur d'Alene City Hall, 710 Mullan Avenue. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration fee is $11 for city residents and $22 for non-city residents.
