POST FALLS - On days like Thursday, with wind and rain mixed in with 40-degree temperatures, it makes it difficult for Lake City High senior Leanne Asper to run while battling asthma at the same time.
But you couldn't tell during the girls 800 meters at the annual District 1 all-star meet at Post Falls High.
Asper won the race in 2 minutes, 21.02 seconds to set a meet and school record.
"It was cool," Asper said. "I wanted to run a little faster, but it was cool to get the school record. I didn't know I'd done it until they announced it. It was pretty hard with the head wind and getting cold. I've got asthma, so in the cold it makes it a little harder to breathe when I'm running."
Asper also ran on the Timberwolves' winning 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. The 4x200 team, which included Carly Garcia, Alissa Joliff and Maddison Ward, also set a meet record with a 1:44.65.
"We had a few of the girls that ran a little tight today," Asper said. "But I think we've got a really good shot at state."
Lake City senior Nick Gosselin repeated as champion in the 400 in 50.08.
"It was kind of cool to win again," Gosselin said. "I really don't look at it as winning, but trying to do my best in each race and letting the outcome be whatever it is."
Freshman hurdler Kaitlyn Gunnerson of Coeur d'Alene finished second in the 100 hurdles to Wednesday Walton of Post Falls, then beat Walton in the 300 hurdles.
"It's really great," Gunnerson said. "I've been working really hard on my technique and getting out of the blocks faster. This really shows that when it's warm just how much better I can do."
Coeur d’Alene rested Morgan Struble, who won both hurdle events last year, as well as sprinter Carlos Martinez. Both were out with hip injuries, Coeur d’Alene coach Linda Lanker said, and will return for the 5A Region 1 meet next Thursday and Friday in Lewiston.
“It’s been really great working with her this year,” Gunnerson said of Struble. “She’s been able to push me even harder with her in the lane next to me.”
Post Falls senior Austin Funk won his third straight championship in the discus.
“It was a good feeling,” Funk said. “I had a big PR my sophomore year and won again last year, so it was nice to get a third straight.”
Funk has given a verbal commitment to compete at Modesto (Calif.) Junior College next year, where he said he’ll concentrate on the hammer throw.
“I’d give myself a ‘C’ today in the shot,” Funk said. “It’s a nice meet to win and get PRs, but what matters is regionals in Lewiston and state in a few weeks.”
Of the rain and wind during the day, Funk added that he was prepared for it.
“It was a little cold, but I just had to go out and throw,” Funk said. “This isn’t the first time I’ve thrown in the rain, but today wasn’t ideal conditions.”
Zack Linscott of Lake City won the long jump and also ran on their 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.
As the meet showcased athletes and relays with the top 16 times and/or marks in District 1, no team scores were kept.
