ANCHORS
Change comes when the sky turns blue,
The breeze is soft and everything seems clear.
It comes when corners of your mouth reach for the stars.
It throws anchors to keep them down.
You feel alone and betrayed,
But your hands still have scars,
Maybe there's no change at all.
You're the same as you always were,
Just with deeper eyes.
What happens, happens.
You're still alive.

SUCCESSFUL GARDENING
The candle flickers oh so softly
As the snow outside does fall
To my garden this seems quite costly
My plants I think I've lost them all
It is however good for writing
If not for growing our food
Snow rain hail and sometimes lightning
Move me to express my mood
I suppose that's why I like extended winter
Even with it's oft depressing days
Because it seems if lives were simpler
We could much better fix our gaze
On things besides our frazzled schedules
And if the Dow is up or down
We'd instead find our days full
Enjoying that white stuff all around
Sitting inside good book in hand
Hot cup of coca or was it coffee
Here with my wife things seem so grand
Then she asks about the strawberries
They are quite hardy I assure her
As much hoping as I am knowing
I know that they like the sun far better
But for now it just keeps on snowing
Piling under fresh turned dirt and seeds
It sure does make me thankful
That for all my grocery needs
I can go to Winco for a car-full
And it also makes me stop to think
That despite the initial expense
A greenhouse may be the missing link
Between this mess and gardening success
