HELENA — Glacier’s Kellen Bates and Katya Kulikova both won No. 1 singles titles Saturday at the Helena Invitational tennis tournament.

Bates coasted to an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Braun of Missoula Hellgate in his championship match.

Bates advanced to the final with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Glenn Strickler of Flathead in the semifinals.

Kulikova stopped Molly Crum of Great Falls High in her championship match, 7-6, 6-3.

Kulikova downed Kaitlin Nichols of Helena High in the semifinals 6-4, 6-2.

Glacier’s Hailey Blalack lost to Crum in semifinal action, 6-2, 6-4.

Blalack battled back to finish third

Strickler placed fourth, losing in the consolation final to Blake Miller of Missoula Hellgate, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

Glacier’s Hunter Blalack was also a semifinalist, but lost to Braun 6-4, 7-6.

Teammate Mario Hernandez fell in the semifinals at No. 2 singles to Aidan Goodman of Livingston, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Goodman went on to win the No. 2 title match.

Glacier’s Evan Froystad and Izaak Castren placed third at No. 2 doubles.

Glacier’s Ingrid Ericksen and Molly Wright also finished third in No. 2 doubles.

“Glenn Strickler put together a super weekend in a tough bracket,” Flathead coach Jeff Anderson said.

“He played well.

“Other bright spots, going into the final day we had most of our players still in tournament,” Anderson added.

“We had a lot of individuals who made a lot of gains. That’s really neat to see.

“The kids are competing, having fun and having a real positive experience.”
