PLAINS - The Plains Town Council met May 1 to discuss monthly protocol as well as the latest news on the status of the E.L. Johnson Memorial Pool.

The town council, led by Mayor Michael Brinson, first discussed old business, such as  amending floodplain regulations, and accepting bids for house on Balch Well property (Joe Sheppard bid $500 and got it); approved the minutes, then got into new business.

One of the main items discussed of the new business was that of the job description and hours of the deputy clerk/clerk of court. Since the retirement of Linda Arnold, Cathie Emmett has since taken the position and the town was considering consolidating two positions into one in place of Cathie’s former post.

The council passed the motion to further examine the job description before coming to a decision and beginning the process of hiring for the position.

Another main item of new business discussed was the hiring of pool lifeguards and the anticipated pool opening date. According to Jenifer Reynolds, chairperson of the Parks & Recreation Committee, they interviewed several applicants for seven lifeguard positions at the pool for the upcoming summer. For their lifeguarding certification, those chosen for the job will need to get certified as well as receive their CPR certification. Of the seven applicants chosen, four of them are 18 years old. The council motioned to hire the seven and the motion passed. Parks & Rec also indicated that they expect to open the E.L. Johnson Memorial Pool on Monday, June 4, weather permitting.

Shortly after, the council meeting was adjourned.
