COEUR d'ALENE - A senior citizen was scammed out of more than $5,000 after being convinced she won a large amount of money.

According to a police report, the Coeur d'Alene woman said she began receiving telephone calls in April from a man who spoke with an accent. The man told her she had won $250,000 and a Mercedes Benz.

In order to claim her money, the man told her she needed to send cash. She was told to purchase Green Dot cards in specific amounts and then provide the caller with the numbers of the cards, the report said.

The woman bought more than $5,500 in Green Dot cards. She said the callers convinced her they were traveling across the country to deliver her cash in person on May 6.

"They called several times to say they needed money to complete their journey," the report said, and the victim "continued to send money each time they requested and was convinced she would receive the $250,000 prize soon."

The scam finally came to light when the woman's son and daughter-in-law noticed more than $500 in incoming international calls on the cell phone account and asked what was going on. It was then the women realized she was the victim of a scam, police said.

She said it completely wiped out her checking and savings accounts. She said she is still receiving multiple daily calls from the suspect. The victim plans to change her cell number.

Police said the suspect called from various Jamaica extensions.
